Modern Day Prophets?

According to the Bible, can there be modern day prophets?

Now, I’m not speaking about pastors and ministers, as they are often referred to as prophets in the Bible as they too prophecy when they teach prophecy, etc but when I am referring to prophets in this article, I am talking about an individual that passes all the Biblical tests of a true prophet and has been specially chosen by the Lord to be such, take Jeremiah, Elijah, and Moses to name a few. Click here to see that list of Biblical tests – https://remnantofgod.org/Trueprophets.htm

Let’s take a look at what the Word of God says to answer our question – can there be modern day Prophets?

1. We read that after Jesus ascending on high, He gave gifts unto men (His church):

“Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:” (Ephesians 4:8-12)

“To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” (1 Corinthians 12:10-11)

2. We also read that not only can an individual, male or female receive the commission of being a prophet of the Lord but that the gift of prophecy is one of the characteristics of God’s end time remnant church.

“And the dragon (Satan – Revelation 12:9) was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” (Revelation 12:17)

And what is the testimony of Jesus Christ?

“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” (Revelation 19:10)

Note: A woman in prophecy according to the Bible, is a symbol for an obedient or disobedient church.

“For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:2)

“I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman.” (Jeremiah 6:2)

Note: Yes, woman too can be prophets. (Exodus 15:20, Judges 4:4, 2 Kings 22:14, Nehemiah 6:14, Isaiah 8:3, Luke 2:36, Joel 2:28, Acts 2:16-19)

3. It was in Joel 2 that it was also prophecied regarding prophesying in the last days:

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.” (Joel 2:28 & 29)

“But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; (Joel 2:28-32) And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:” (Acts 2:16-19)

There is a lot more that could be said but I wanted to share at least two witnesses testifying to the reality of God confirming that there can be modern day prophets and that the gift of understanding prophecy is a gift/fruit of His end time, remnant worldwide church.

“This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” (2 Corinthians 13:1)

May God bless you!
